Resetting Your Mind and Reigniting Your Passion: 🚫🧠Dopamine Detox💆‍♂️🧘‍♀️

Have you ever attempted to stop using your mobile phone at work or avoid binge-watching TV shows in your free time, only to find yourself back in the same place where you started?

Are you tired of not living life on your own terms?

Do you find yourself in a dilemma about why you can't avoid things that you don't want to be a part of in the first place?

Allow me to take a moment of your time to provide you with a profound understanding of dopamine detox...

Dopamine

Is a molecule that triggers feelings of happiness when you engage in activities like playing games, watching movies, reading books (sometimes), or chatting with friends.

However, why does it sometimes become an overwhelming stimulant?

The saying "Too much of anything is good for nothing" holds true in everyone's life when we cross the boundaries.

Have you ever used social media to spend your leisure time and wondered how it ends up occupying most of your time?

Scrolling through pages and liking photos may seem like a futile activity, yet you find yourself doing it.

It's all because of dopamine; it kicks in when you hit the like button or swipe through the next page or reels on Instagram.

💡
Scenario 1: For example, If you were working at night and a notification popped up on the screen with a provocative picture and tempting text, urging you to open it and watch related videos, what would you do in that situation?

In reality, many of us may end up clicking through the link and watching the enticing videos, draining our energy in the process.

💡
Scenario 2:  You may have experienced that while watching motivational or inspirational videos, you feel energized and ready to take on anything.

However, after an hour or so, you find yourself searching for that motivation again.

Where did it all go?

Have you ever wondered why you keep returning to the same place despite having the drive to move forward?

Dopamine builds itself by feeding off energy and cravings.

However, if it keeps receiving more fuel and energy, there is no space left to feed anything else.

Watching motivational videos increases dopamine levels, but at the same time, you may not have taken any actions despite the motivation gained.

The brain gets a sense of fulfillment when immersing ourselves in watching many motivational videos, but over time, it leads to a loss of momentum towards our goals, and we find ourselves needing motivation again.

personal experience 📓

Here is “how I felt when I experienced a rush of dopamine. An incident reminded me of how powerful dopamine can be. I was working on a project when I suddenly received a notification from Instagram with a simple "say hello" message, without further details visible. Intrigued, I couldn't help but wonder what the message contained, so I opened the app. I ended up reading all the messages from strangers, and before I knew it, I spent 3 hours on Instagram, watching reels and losing track of time.”

Detox

Detox is the process of eliminating activities that disrupt your healthy schedule and negatively impact them.

Who can take it?

Ask yourself; Am I,

1.     Looking for ways to enhance my focus on challenging tasks

2.    Frequently doubting on myself

3.    Lacking in consistency?

4.    Feeling I can’t control my time?

👉how to do dopamine detox?

Now that you have an understanding of dopamine and its influence on your life, simply knowing what it causes may not be enough to keep you productive.

You are aware that dopamine is merely a chemical that stimulates your brain to seek pleasure by tempting you with various impulses.

Remove actions that are not helpful in improving your work or mental clarity.

These actions include using social media excessively, binge-watching web series on platforms like Netflix and Hotstar, spending excessive time on TV, engaging in porn consumption, and playing games online.

In other words, putting your phone on silent can lead to completing your work more efficiently than before.

I don't mean to completely avoid using a mobile phone since much of our work relies on laptops and mobile devices nowadays.

However, it's important to clarify that the focus should be on deleting social media, games, YouTube, and other online connectivity apps.

Additionally, ensure that your phone is always on silent mode during focused work sessions to prevent any notification sounds from distracting you.

Is it the villain of the story?

Like I said, the intention is not to isolate you from your life.

Instead, by removing bad habits, you create space and time to learn new skills or develop the habits you desire.

This approach allows you to strengthen and enhance your skills more effectively.

This is how people illustrate that dopamine detox can be a pathway to improve your mental health.

Some people misunderstand how the concept works and may end up feeling discouraged, thinking, "I can't do it."

This is a common experience for many because completely cutting out aspects of our lives is not realistic.

Achieving results cannot happen within a short timeframe, not even in a month or a year.

Instead of abstaining from all activities, it's more effective to observe and identify what is hindering your progress.

Take a closer look at why you haven't seen improvement in certain areas and focus on addressing those specific issues..

Do’s and Don’ts

As a whole, dopamine detox simply replaces time-worthy skills with the bad habits you have.

Keep in mind🧠

Merely putting a stop to bad habits is not enough because there's no guarantee that you won't return to where you started.

Additionally, dopamine is not an energy source that increases when you have no bad habits to occupy your time.

The feelings and temptations you experience over watching porn, for example, will still be present even after completing your detox.

However, during that time, you may have a moment of hesitation before opening a notification or clicking on a video.

Exactly! The hesitation over your temptation arises when you occupy yourself with useful activities or the desired skills you want to learn in life.

Engaging in these productive pursuits can help you resist the craving to open your mobile phone and indulge in unproductive habits.

🚀Make fasting easier

To begin with, eliminate addictive activities such as watching movies, using social media, and playing games.

Replace these with more productive activities, but avoid merely substituting one addictive behavior with another, like switching to a different social media platform to escape one.

For example, if you are fasting from using YouTube, opt for reading a book instead of browsing through videos.

The goal is to engage in activities that contribute positively to your personal growth and well-being, rather than falling into new addictive patterns.

Connect with real-life activities such as,

·         Journaling

·         Exercising

·         Content creation

·         Reading books

·         Learning new skills(🤔remember the interaction with mobile)

THE Result:

The first few days can be challenging as you try to control your itchiness for using gadgets, but as time goes on, you start adapting to your new lifestyle. Eventually, you begin to enjoy life without the constant pull of technology dictating your actions.

After a month of dopamine detox, you will notice significant changes in your behavior and how you interact with others. Many people have reported that dopamine fasting improved their relationships with friends, family, and colleagues.

I would say, utilize that time to shape your skills and prove how you can be valuable.
